About the Studios

The Centre is equipped with seven artists studios including a print studio situated in their own wing on the complex. These are wonderfully converted two story farm buildings which are very close to the courtyard and house. Each of the spaces is well lit with natural daylight, and with additional lighting for winter-time. They are well equipped with easels, deep stainless-steel sinks, hot water. They are centrally heated. Studios 1-3 share a toilet space with the equally well-appointed Print Studio (studio 4) on the ground floor. Studios 5-7 share toilet facilities on the upper floor, which is accessible from the orchard. They are a fabulously spacious bright and airy.

Accessibility & Safety

While we have plans for the eventual accessible upgrade of two studios in this block to include fully accessible toilet facilities, we have one further studio, known as the sculpture studio, which is wheelchair accessible, with an accessible toilet, stainless steel sink, up-to-date lighting, and central heating. Visual artists, sculptors and illustrators should note that for reasons of fire safety, we do not allow ‘hot’ work onsite (kilns, blow torches etc.). Visual artists are also kindly requested to keep ‘wet’ work within the allocated studio space. Wet work (oil, watercolour, acrylic etc.) is not permitted in the conservatory, any area of the self-catering cottages, or anywhere in the Big House.

Materials

We do not have facilities onsite to sell or store canvas, paper, or other art materials. Artists must bring everything they need or organize deliveries from art material companies to arrive during their residency, or within a week prior to arrival.

I’ve known The Tyrone Guthrie Centre since its beginning and in many guises – as resident, visitor, Board member and Chairperson. What is constantly astonishing is that it has preserved, for more than forty years, the conditions and climate for artists to do their best work.
